The Area

The Menagerie is the largest residential District in the city. Located in the east of The Pit, it is called home by millions of people. Apartments straddle each other with no clear indication of planning, structures are placed haphazardly, and exposed wiring and plumbing hang from every surface. Structures here are built out of whatever was available when construction began, making each building inconsistent with its neighbour. Shops and traders are scattered amongst its twisted interior. Sunlight no longer reaches the bottom half of structures. The official name of this area is “Damascus Housing Project 28-B”. The areas low elevation due to being located inside The Pit allows residents of richer areas outside to look into the settlement, resulting in its nickname “The Menagerie”.

The Inhabitants

The people here are in poverty, but manage to scrape enough together to avoid being relegated to The Sewers. This is where the majority of the population of New Damascus calls home. Many years ago these people would have worked in the mines themselves, however with the advent of simulants, these jobs are long gone. The simulants that occupy this area are primarily designed for mining and demolition, however the area is also home to a plethora of more militarised models. The increase in militarisation came after the first of many uprising in the housing districts, these simulants now “keep the peace” by quashing any individuals expressing civil unrest.
