The Area
A dingy, bubbling cesspit. The sewers is where everything forgotten and discarded ends up. It sits at the bottom of this enormous vertical city, trash and debris collecting on its surface. The majority of the area is subterranean, paved over by a city that wants to forget about it.
Everything here is built from concrete and rebar. As it has been left, languishing, the concrete is covered in cracks, pieces of rusted rebar protrude from every surface. Large lakes of toxic, glowing, green sludge occupy its canals and pipes - providing the only reliable source of light. Every inch of the surface down here is covered in trash, stains and grime. A thick smog permeates the air here, fresh air is a luxury that has long since been abandoned.
Despite the areas hostility, those with nowhere left to turn often choose here. Far from the constant surveillance of the surface, it provides privacy for those who need to do what they must to survive. As a result, the area is naturally the centre of crime in the city - from petty thieves to drug cartels.
No standard system of government can be observed in the sewers. The few rules there are are enforced and legislated by the three dominant gangs. The inhabitants of the sewers are primarily human, though many defective Simulants also make their way here. The people who live here refer to the area as “Green Lake”. A jarring divide can be seen among the populous in terms of their outlook. Some are depressed, destitute and suicidal - slowly starving in a world that wouldn’t miss them. Others revel in its dog-eat-dog environment - stealing what they need to survive and killing those in their way. Outside of the major gangs, small enclaves are scattered around the area, drifters who ended up together more by chance than any specific desire for company.
The environment of the sewers posses particular danger as well. Avalanches of concrete have been known to take out settlements in an instant, pushing entire buildings into the corrosive neon runoff.
The People
The humans that occupy this are fall into two categories: Destitute and Manic.
Destitute humans keep to themselves, wallowing in their misery. They often don’t survive long, either choosing to throw themselves into the corrosive river, or being vulnerable enough to be snuffed out by others. Those who do survive may end up in enclaves - small settlements along the coast of the lake.
The other category, Manic humans, are those who have felt welcomed by the atmosphere of sin. Often drug addicted and violent, they are kept on a leash by the three major gangs. Using their control over drug supply and distribution, the gang leaders wield an army of manic humans to conduct their bidding. Manics live in gang controlled settlements, large areas of territory the stretch across the sewers.
Simulants also dwell down here, though not fulfilling any intended purpose. Simulants that end up in the sewers are broken and discarded. It’s a common sight to see them acting out their previous roles around the entrances to the sewers. Missing pieces, their speech garbled, they rust and rot unit their electronics finally give out.
